What are the Jeep Cherokee & Jeep Grand Cherokee?

Both the Jeep Cherokee and the larger Jeep Grand Cherokee are crossover/SUVs from the newly formed Stellantis Company. Stellantis is the new company that formed as a result of a merger between Groupe PSA and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles in January 2021.

The new Jeep Cherokee is a five-passenger vehicle that is classified as a compact crossover utility vehicle. It is powered by a choice of three engines ranging from a 2.4-liter, naturally aspirated inline-4 cylinder engine producing 180 horsepower and 171 lb-ft of torque, or a 3.2-liter V6 making 271 horsepower and 239 lb-ft of torque and finally a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-4 putting out 270 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. All come with front-wheel-drive, but can also be ordered with available all-wheel-drive (AWD), depending on trim level.

All engines in the Jeep Cherokee are mated to a 9-speed automatic transmission, with the V6 being the towing capacity leader at 4,500 pounds.

The new Jeep Grand Cherokee is a midsized Sport Utility Vehicle that slots above the Jeep Cherokee. While the Jeep Cherokee measures 182.0 inches from front to rear, with a wheelbase of 106.5 inches, the Jeep Grand Cherokee runs the measuring tape to a length of 189.8 inches with a 114.8-inch wheelbase. Despite its larger size, the Grand Cherokee still carries up to five passengers.

Power for the Jeep Grand Cherokee comes from an embarrassment of rich powerplants. Start with the base 3.6-liter V6 that makes 295 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque. It includes standard two-wheel-drive and available all-wheel-drive (AWD). Next up is the 5.7-liter V8 producing 360 horsepower and 390 lb-ft of torque. Shhh! Don't tell anyone, but it's a HEMI! The 6.4-liter V8 is next in the Grand Cherokee SRT, with 475 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque. Finally, for Jeep fans thinking that too much is never enough, there's the 6.2-liter Supercharged V8 in the Grand Cherokee Trackhawk. Power is outrageous: This huffed V8 makes 707 horsepower and 645 lb-ft of torque!

All engines in the Grand Cherokee send the power front and rear via an 8-speed automatic transmission. The Jeep Grand Cherokee tows up to an impressive 7,400 pounds.

What about inside the Cherokee & Grand Cherokee?

Inside the Jeep Cherokee, drivers will find an extremely modern interior with gauges and instruments located exactly where you would expect them to be. The standard infotainment system is based around the 7-inch Uconnect 4 touchscreen system that incorporates Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. The only thing that is better is the uprated Uconnect 8.4 system with its 8-inch screen and Amazon Alexa integration.

Seating is good front and back and gets better as you go up the food chain trim level catalog. Cargo capacity behind the rear seat is 25.8 cubic feet. Fold those seats forward and that space opens up to a generous 54.7-cubic feet.

The interior of the Jeep Grand Cherokee features complete comfort all the way down to the base Laredo trim level. But as you climb the meat wagon in trim levels you will find supportive leather seating with heating and ventilating in the front and numerous other luxury features.

Other options will dress up the Grand Cherokee even more, including the Uconnect 8.4 system with Navigation and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. There's even a 19-speaker / 825 watt Harman Kardon audio system that makes your Jeep a high-performance concert hall on wheels.

Cargo capacity by the numbers measures up thusly: Behind the rear seat, you will find 36.3 cubic feet. Fold those rear seats forward and you will find a cavernous 68.3 cubic feet.
