2012 Ram 1500 Performance & Handling
One of the most important facts to mention regarding the Ram 1500 and its four trim levels is the sheer level of customization it offers. All 2012 Ram 1500 trims can come in either 4x2 (RWD) or 4x4 configurations. Engine classes begin with the base 4x2 ST trim's standard 3.7L V6 engine, paired with a 4-speed automatic transmission, which produces 215 horsepower and 235 pound-feet of torque. Fuel economy falls at 14 MPG city/20 MPG highway and 16 MPG combined. On the 4x2 Crew Cab ST and all 4x4 ST models comes a standard 4.7L V8 engine paired with a 5-speed automatic transmission, producing 310 horsepower and 330 pound-feet of torque, as well as 14 city/20 (RWD), 19 (AWD) highway /16 combined MPG. Standard on all Sport and Laramie trims is a 5.7L HEMI V8 engine with Variable Valve Timing (VVT) and MDS Fuel Saver Technology, paired with a 5-speed automatic transmission. This engine produces 390 horsepower and 407 pound-feet of torque. Fuel economy ranges from RWD 14 city/20 highway/16 combined MPG to AWD 13 city/19 highway/15 combined MPG.

The upgraded SLT trim comes with exterior and interior trim upgrades, 17-inch aluminum wheels, remote keyless entry, power heated mirrors, an underhood lamp, express one-touch power windows, power door locks, a passenger visor mirror, glove box and ashtray lamps, an overhead console with reading lamps, stain-resistant cloth fabric, a folding rear seat with underseat storage (Quad and Crew Cabs), floor mats, SIRIUS Satellite Radio, and an Electronic Vehicle Information Center (EVIC) in the instrument cluster, including a Tire Pressure Monitoring System display.
The Sport trim comes equipped with a dual exhaust with aggressive note, 20-inch aluminum wheels, monotone finish, body-color grille with chrome billet inserts, body-color front fascia and rear bumper, body-color heated mirrors, quad halogen headlamps, fog lamps, sport cloth high-shoulder bucket seats, a 10-way power driver's seat, 60/40 split/fold rear seat, a Media Center 430 radio upgrade, a leather-wrapped steering wheel with audio controls, monotone interior treatment, a floor console-mounted shifter, soft upper instrument panel and door trim, and a 115-volt power inverter.
The top Laramie trim maxes out with ParkSense Rear Park Assist System, dual exhaust with refined power note, 20-inch chrome-clad wheels, a security alarm, two-tone paint with wheel flares, exterior chrome trim upgrades, Laramie badging, a Media Center 430 radio with surround sound speakers and subwoofer, power heated front seats, a leather-wrapped heated steering wheel, Dual-Zone Automatic Temperature Control, power 10-way driver's seat, 6-way power passenger seat, leather-trimmed 40/20/40 heated bench seat with 60/40 rear split/fold seat and storage, bright accents, woodgrain door trim, and power adjustable pedals.
Customers have their choice of cab on most models, starting with regular cab which comes in 6-foot, 4-inch or 8-foot builds. The Quad Cab adds a bench and comes with a 6-foot, 4-inch bed. The Crew cab offers an even larger cabin, and comes with a 5-foot, 7-inch bed. Of the four main trims, the ST, SLT and Sport can be equipped with any of these beds. The premium Laramie trim, as well as many of the custom sub-trims comes only in Quad or Crew cabs.
Building off the four base trims are a slew of sub-trims that are available to customers. Many of these sub-trims offer unique options or features that appeal to a very specific use. Building off the ST trim are the Tradesman and Express trims. The Outdoorsman builds off the SLT and is geared toward sportsmen. The R/T and Big Horn (known as the Lone Star in Texas) also build off of the SLT trim.
